LODD: U.S. Forest Service Firefighter Michael Hallenbeck

Michael_HallenbeckThe United States Forest Service has announced the line of duty death of one of their own.

USFS Firefighter Michael Hallenbeck, 21, from Shingle Springs, died late Saturday, August 8, 2015 after being struck by a tree during initial attack on the Sierra Fire near Lake Tahoe.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and crew members of this brave firefighter," said USFS Pacific Southwest forester Randy Moore.

One other firefighter was injured in the blaze so far. Brother Hallenbeck is the second USFS firefighter to die battling this year's wildland fires.

More than 10,000 federal, state and local firefighters are on the front lines battling 20 active wildland fires.

Candlelight Vigil: A candlelight vigil honoring Brother Hallenbeck will be held Wednesday evening, August 12 at 7:00pm at the Sierra-at-Tahoe resort. DETAILS HERE

Procession: An escort procession for Brother Hallenbeck begins at 10am Thursday in South Lake Tahoe, proceeds along US 50, ending in Rescue at appx. 2:00pm.
