After courageously enduring a 19-month long battle with cancer, Matthew Bera succumbed to the disease. Matt began his career in the fire service in 1995 as both a firefighter and a paramedic for the Sacramento City Fire Department. He was eventually promoted to the position of Apparatus Operator in 2003. Despite the painful treatments of chemotherapy, Matt never gave up hope and remained true to his faith. He was said to have faced death the way he faced life - fearless and full of courage. Regarded as a true "hero" to all those who knew him, Matt has never ceased to impact the lives of the people he served.
