Samuel Blumenberg started as a firefighter in 1942 and in his 28-year career, he reached the rank of assistant fire chief at Hamilton Air Force Base. He was well-respected and liked by his colleagues. He was last seen on February 14, 1970, while working on a Hamilton base rescue vessel in San Pablo Bay with another member of their Civil Engineering Squadron. The weather was stormy and their bodies were recovered almost two weeks later.
