Engineer Dave Euerle was no stranger to the saving of lives. In 10 years on the job at Santa Clara City, he was awarded the Lifesaving Award and was named 2005 Firefighter of the Year, for his own work as a paramedic and his commitment as a paramedic and EMT instructor. The one life Dave could not save was his own, but his courage in facing the ravages of job-related cancer gave his colleagues what his chief described as "a lesson in courage, determination, loyalty and trust."
