Luster Lee Knight
Rank:
Department: Alameda County
Deceased: October 24, 2008
Luster Knight's 40-year career with the fire service taught him many things: humility, teamwork, compassion. "And on top of all that, there are red lights and sirens," he said. It was the perfect job for Luster, whose life was committed to service. He was actively involved in the Davis Street Family Resource Center and the Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce and volunteered as an EMT for junior football leagues. A 20-year veteran with the Alameda County Fire Department, he was the department's first African-American to retire. He died from job-related lymphoma at the age of 59.
