Robert “Smokey” McGillivray dreamed of being a firefighter since he was a child. He pursued his dream career in the fire service
and eventually rose through the ranks to fire engineer, where he exemplified the finest qualities of a true firefighter. He received a 30-year commendation with the Eureka Fire Department and at the time of his death he was the department’s most senior member, having served a total of 36 years. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, and the San Francisco Giants. Robert died as a result of cardiac arrest in 1964.
