Luther P. Rodarte
Department: USFS
Deceased: September 01, 1967
Being a wildland firefighter means spending a lot of time far from home. But the ties that bind the profession together know no borders. Eleven-year USFS veteran Luther Rodarte was 1,200 miles away from his Santa Maria Ranger Station in the summer of 1967, battling the "hottest fire in 30 years. When Lee Collins of Montana, got caught "behind lines," Luther only knew that a brother was in trouble. He lost his life trying to rescue Collins, leaving behind a wife, five children and a hero's legacy.
