A seasonal firefighter with one of CDF's elite Helitack units, Firefighter Eva Marie Schicke died September 12, 2004, while constructing fire lines during a rapidly moving wildland fire in the Stanislaus National Forest. In her fifth season as a CDF firefighter, Schicke had rapidly advanced to the Helitack unit, and earned the respect of her colleagues for her competence and grit.
