John Self
Department: USFS
Deceased: July 28, 2002
Recently becoming a member of the USFS firefighting crew, Firefighter John Self was in his second year as a summer seasonal firefighter at age 19. His life was cut short, along with three others, when their engine sliped off a dirt road and tumbled down an embankment. Blinded by darkness and billows of smoke, the team had been patrolling the fire lines during the Stanza Fire in the Klamath National Forest.
